Redefining Packaging for Sail

Once the pen design was complete, It was time to think about packaging. I noticed that most pens in the market come in traditional boxes. But I wanted something different.
Since Sail is designed to be a collector's piece, I thought—why not create packaging that doubles up as a stand? A box that isn’t just for storage but enhances the pen’s presence, making it a part of your workspace or collection.
This approach saves material, gives the box a purpose, and lets you showcase Sail in style. ♻�️

CMF: Finding the Right Look

Once the design was complete, the next step was choosing the perfect color. I wanted the paint to enhance the highlights, cast shadows, and define the sharp, flowing lines of the pen.
We experimented with multiple colors—both digitally and physically—testing different shades and finishes. To achieve the right look and feel, we tested gloss, semi-gloss, and matte finishes before finalizing the perfect one.
Durability was just as important as aesthetics, so we conducted several tests to ensure the paint could withstand scratches and last over time. As a result, each Sail pen goes through a 4-layer painting process to achieve the perfect balance of depth, protection, and luxury.

The Pure Concept of Sail

In this post, I want to share the original concept of Sail—the pure vision I had for the pen before we made adjustments for practicality. This is how I envisioned it: sleek, bold, and iconic.
While the initial concept captured the essence, we had to make changes to the production design, mainly for ergonomics and manufacturability.
Also, I thought it would be a great idea to present Sail in a way that mirrors model ships—displayed in a glass case, highlighting its elegance and design. A true work of art.

From concept to prototype
After receiving several inquiries about the pen, I decided to turn the concept into reality. However, the design I published on Yanko was far from production-ready.
The first step is creating a CAD model to 3D print > test> refine. After multiple iterations, I finally got the shape right. The biggest challenge was balancing the original concept with practicality—staying true to the concept while ensuring it could be manufactured.
Another challenge was designing a cap-closing mechanism with a section that felt harmonious with the pen’s form while remaining comfortable to write with.
I had to make adjustments based on manufacturing methods, which was a learning process in itself. For me, creating CAD models is both fun and deeply satisfying, especially when you see the design come to life.

From sketches to concept

When I first designed the concept for Sail, it was just an idea—a vision of turning sleek yacht-inspired aesthetics into a fountain pen.
I shared my concept with @yankodesign_official and the response was far beyond what I expected.
To my surprise, I even received a deal from China. But back then, I had very little knowledge of engineering or manufacturing. That’s when I also realized the importance of protecting ideas. Many advised me to file for design registration, and though I eventually got it done, I wish I had taken the time to learn the process myself—it would’ve saved me a lot of effort and cost.
Sharing Sail on Yanko Design was a turning point. It gave me the confidence to pursue this dream and make it real Today, Sail isn’t just a pen. It made me realize it’s a reminder of the value of sharing your ideas, protecting your vision, and learning along the way.

When I started brainstorming, I noticed something—they were all cylindrical! While the craftsmanship and materials were impeccable, I wanted to create something different. My vision? A pen that’s not just functional but a statement piece.

I wasn’t thinking about nibs or sizes back then. My focus was purely on aesthetics—something beautiful, balanced, and breathtaking. 🌊

One day, while surfing the internet, I stumbled across a photo of a sleek yacht. Its elegant lines and dynamic shape reminded me of a pen—and that’s when the idea hit me. Why not design a pen inspired by this timeless luxury?

The result is Sail, a pen that’s desirable, cool, and undeniably luxurious. Here are my original sketches from those early days of dreaming and designing. ✍️
